This weekend home is located in Kolar District in Karnataka and is about 70 kms away from Bangalore City. The Kolar landscape is dotted with beautifully weathered rocky outcrops and hills. This setting was instrumental in choosing raw granite as the primary material of construction. The granite was extracted from a quarry nearby and the masonry work was completed by a local mason. Along with the granite, the overall material selection was done keeping the distance of the source material and labour in mind with walls of polished cement plaster and a high Mangalore tiled roof.
An important element of the client’s brief was to locate a heated plunge pool as part of the main living area, around which all the seating would be arranged, and casual multi-functional spaces that could be used for sleeping, when required.
To keep the space sparse, the seating and other elements were finished in the same polished cement as the wall. A few additional chairs and stools have been sourced from IKEA. Colourful cushions and dhurries add warmth to the space, along with artworks by printmaker Krishna Reddy and Bangalore based artist Amarnath.
